Hoop Dreams by Max Marino is a short, illustrated sports story about Beatriz, a girl who has always admired her basketball-star older brother, Emilio. When Beatriz decides to try basketball for herself, she is surprised that Emilio does not support her right away. Things get even more complicated when he becomes the coach of her team, and Beatriz has to prove that she belongs on the court.
The book blends basketball, sibling relationships, confidence, perseverance, teamwork, and proving yourself. It has that “little sister steps onto the court and refuses to stay in anyone’s shadow” feeling. 🏀
Best fit: Readers in grades 3–5, especially kids who enjoy sports stories, basketball, sibling dynamics, quick reads, illustrated chapter books, and underdog characters.
Content note: Includes sibling conflict, pressure to prove oneself, and sports-team tension, but it appears to be a gentle, elementary-friendly read.
