Jasmine Toguchi, Mochi Queen by Debbi Michiko Florence is a warm, funny early chapter book about an eight-year-old Japanese American girl who wants to prove she is ready for more responsibility.

Jasmine’s family is preparing for their New Year’s celebration, which includes making mochi, a traditional Japanese rice cake. But Jasmine is frustrated because the older family members get to do the exciting jobs, while she is stuck with smaller tasks. Determined to show she is capable, Jasmine tries to do something usually reserved for the boys in her family: pounding the mochi rice.

As Jasmine works to prove herself, she learns about family traditions, patience, perseverance, and finding her own voice. The story is sweet, relatable, and full of cultural details that make it a great choice for young readers growing into chapter books.
